Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited genetic disorder affecting millions of people worldwide. It is caused due to an abnormality of haemoglobin which can slow down the blood flow and oxygen to different parts of the body. Normal blood cells which are round and flexible become sticky, rigid C or sickle shape, in sickle cell disease. The normal life span of RBCs is 120 days which turns down to 10-12 days here.
Prevention and Awareness: As there are 25% chances of the child being affected by sickle cell anemia if both parents inherit the affected genes, or child to be a carrier if one of them is SCT, such people should consult doctors when deciding about family planning.
