An anal fissure is a superficial tear in the lining of the anus that is painful and different from hemorrhoids. It primarily occurs at the anterior or posterior of the dentate line and other locations imply underlying secondary causes. Anal fissures caused due to primary or secondary causes include cancer, HIV infection, sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis, trauma, pregnancy & post-partum, inflammatory bowel disease, or anal sexual intercourse. Such long-standing anal fissures can be complicated to treat and require interventions other than conventional strategies. The gold standard for treating anal fissures by surgical intervention is lateral internal sphincterotomy (LIS) and includes an open and closed technique.
