Infant Mortality Rate Continues to Decline in India The latest Sample Registration System (SRS) report shows a continued decline in India’s Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), falling from 30 in 2019 to 24 in 2024. Among states, Chhattisgarh reported the highest IMR at 36, followed by Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh at 35. On the lower end, Kerala recorded the lowest IMR at 8, with Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi reporting 11 each.

Interestingly, the decline has been fairly uniform across regions, with rural areas showing a 36% reduction and urban areas a 35% reduction. 2.
