Often India is described as a nation of youth. But, realistically India also has a huge number of elderly when actual numbers are looked at that relative percentage. The Union Government of India has now taken the step to boost specialized care of elderly as well. The number of elderly patients (over 60 years of age) is very high in India. According to the census conducted in 2011, there are 70.6 million of the population is over the age of 60 years.

The number is expected to rise to 173 million by the year 2026. Compared to other developed countries, this number is very high.
