The global prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is highly varied (0.6% - 7.1%) with Iran having a prevalence of 3.4% (1.3% - 18.5%). GDM poses several complications such as preeclampsia, macrosomia, shoulder dystocia, type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity in mothers, and diabetes and cardiovascular diseases in the neonates. Given the disparity in the global prevalence rates of GDM, the World Health Organization (WHO) has suggested the formulation of country-wise guidelines and protocols to screen, diagnose, and manage GDM. This article summarizes the Iranian Endocrine Society guidelines on gestational diabetes mellitus.
