Hansen’s disease, also called leprosy, is caused by the Mycobacterium leprae and can affect the skin, nerves, eyes, and nasal mucosa. In spite of the introduction of multidrug therapy (MDT), which has led to significant improvements in treatment, the global incidence of leprosy remains high. One of the most challenging aspects is treating inflammatory episodes called leprosy reactions, which can affect patients for years even after MDT is complete. The clinical course of the disease and the susceptibility to mycobacteria are attributed to the host immune response, necessitating the review of the immunopathology of this complex disease.
