While the entire country (especially in Northern India) is preparing for Holi celebrations tomorrow, let us remember that the colour powders that are used as powders or liquids in Holi are not all that healthy. Most of them are based on harmful chemicals. Green colour is obtained from Copper Sulphate or CuSO4 -which may cause allergies in eye or even temporary blindness. Purple is obtained from Chromium Iodide or CrI3- which may cause bronchial asthma or other forms of allergy.
Silver is obtained from Aluminum Bromide or AlB3 - a known carcinogen. Black is obtained from Lead Oxide or PbO3, which may cause renal failures or plumbism especially in children. Red is obtained from Mercury Sulphite or HgSO3, which may cause skin cancer or Minamata disease (mental retardation, paralysis, impaired vision...)
