Around a thousand foreign doctors are given temporary permission to do various procedures like live surgery demonstrations in India each year. This year, 676 foreign doctors have already been given temporary permission. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is all set to give the nod to Medical Council of India (MCI) to begin registration of foreign doctors without any test. The proposal vetted by Ministry of Law and Justice will soon be notified. At present only 60,000 doctors’ seats are available in the country.
The reason behind this move is to fight the rising demand, India needs one lakh doctors per year to boost the health arena. According to current policy, only Indian citizen doctors with foreign degrees can practise in India.
