Reconstruction of head and neck defects presents a unique challenge. Unlike other body parts, which can be temporarily treated with dressing changes or even allowed to heal without major complications, immediate closure of head and neck defects is critical for various reasons. The success of head and neck surgery depends on choosing an appropriate reconstructive option based on the patient's fitness and requirements. Though the pectoralis flap is a useful workhorse option, microsurgical techniques have improved outcomes by expanding the available reconstructive methods beyond the limitations of these traditional pedicled flaps.
