The Union Health Ministry has launched a nationwide initiative to turn tragedy into hope by promoting organ and tissue donation from road accident victims. In a directive sent to all states and Union Territories, Director of the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), highlighted India’s urgent need for organs, noting that the country has fewer than one deceased organ donor per million people despite thousands waiting for transplants. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ 2023 report, around 1.7 lakh people lost their lives in road accidents last year.
Many of these victims, often young and otherwise healthy, could have been potential organ donors.
