Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic and potentially life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Over the years, antiretroviral therapy (ART) has evolved and made the entity from a fatal disease to a long-term, manageable condition. However, there are still a few challenges, such as access to continued HIV treatment, stigmatization, and reluctance to address issues related to sexuality and reproduction. As the focus shifts to a long-term approach, it is critical that healthcare systems are adequately positioned to diagnose, treat, and manage AIDS to support optimal patient outcomes.
