Surgeons at a private hospital in Delhi have successfully treated a 33-year-old woman whose brain tissue had herniated into her nasal cavity, a potentially fatal condition if left untreated. The patient had been struggling with chronic nasal obstruction and persistent discharge for several months. Imaging studies, including CT and MRI scans, revealed that part of her brain had descended through an eroded skull base, reaching into her nasal and oral cavities, a situation only a few surgeons encounter in their careers.
A multidisciplinary team carried out an intricate eight-hour operation, combining endoscopic and transcranial techniques to carefully reposition the brain and reconstruct the skull base. “Nearly half of the frontal and basal regions of the brain were prolapsing through the defect, which made the procedure extraordinarily delicate,” noted the hospital’s neurosurgery head.…
