The PCPNDT Act was passed with good intentions and its aim was to prevent the misuse of ultrasound scanning for fetal sex determination. Sadly, it has caused a lot of harm to pregnant women because of the unintended consequences of the mindless implementation of this draconian act, but this has never been reported. Because of the strict reporting requirements laid down by the Act, emergency ultrasound scanning facilities are not easily available. This is true even in large hospitals because the scanning can only by a particular doctor, who has to ensure that he fills in the right forms before even touching the patient - even if the baby maybe dying.
