Among diabetic patients, 25% account for noncritically ill hospitalized ones, while another 12% to 25% experience hyperglycemia. The Endocrine Society has recently issued guidelines to address the emerging areas specific to the target population of the noncritically ill hospitalized adult patient population with diabetes and/or with newly recognized or stress-induced hyperglycemia. The recommendations are based on the important outcomes, feasibility, practicality, patient values, and preferences that can be used for system improvement and clinical practice in cases of frequently encountered inpatient populations.
