Indian Medical Association has called for stringent measures to ensure total coverage in vaccination. They have also sought for strict punishment to those campaigning against vaccination. Child mortality is often described as the best indicator of social and economic progress. Out of 26 million children born in India every year, approximately 1.83 million children die before their fifth birthday. India, despite being one of the fastest growing economies, there has been no visible pattern between per capita income growth and the rate of reduction of child mortality rates.
The annual rate of decline in child mortality between 1990 and 2008 has been 2.25 per cent. As per the 2015 target, India needed to reduce under-5 mortality to 39/1000.
