Latin American countries, sub-Saharan, African an South and South East Asian countries are considered as 'malaria belt'. Of these, India contributes around 50-70% malaria cases in the South East Asia region. Although treatments for malaria are currently available, children below 5 years, pregnant women, immune-compromised patients are at higher risk of mortality due to malaria. India has a roadmap to eliminate Malaria by 2027.

In this effort, a group of researchers from New Delhi has claimed to discover the anti-malarial molecule. Although there is an overall decline in the malarial cases from 2001 to 2013, there is a sudden increase in the mortality or reported cases due to focal outbreaks.
