A laboratory test has confirmed that the diarrhea outbreak in Indore, which has officially resulted in the deaths of at least four people, was caused by contaminated drinking water, officials said on Thursday. The outbreak has affected more than 1,400 residents, exposing serious flaws in the city’s water supply system despite Indore being ranked India’s cleanest city for the last eight consecutive years. The outbreak has been traced to the Bhagirathpura area, where contamination occurred due to a leakage in the main drinking water supply pipeline.

Indore’s Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) said a laboratory report prepared by a city-based medical college confirmed that the drinking water was contaminated as a result of the leak.
