On 22nd April, 2015 Chief Judicial Magistrate, Tiruchi convicted and sentenced three persons to undergo one year imprisonment in the Joseph Eye Hospital case. Dr. Nelson Jesudesan, the hospital director and medical superintendent; Christopher Thomas, Chief Administrative Officer, and Dr. Ashok, a senior ophthalmologist of the Not for profit Voluntary Christian Institution was convicted.
In 2008, in a charity cataract surgery camp 66 eyes organized by the hospital developed endophthalmitis. What should be our policy to minimize and avoid such mishappenings? No doctor on earth treats a patient with intent to harm, but how will a doctor feel safe to be a part of a mass charity event (especially involving surgery) in recent circumstances? http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/three-get-oneyear-jail-term-for-botched-eye-surgeries/article7132179.ece
