Laser pointers are small, hand-held devices that produce a narrow beam of red or green laser light that can traverse long distances. These laser pointers were initially designed as educational and business tools but are now being marketed as toys, exposing children to dangerous risks of eye injury and loss of vision. Case presentation A 9-year-old boy with decreased vision in his left eye  was presented to an ophthalmology clinic. The boy reported that he was playing with a green laser pointer and  gazing into the beam repeatedly.

Eye examination The visual acuity in the left eye was 20/100 , while that in the right eye was 20/20. A funduscopic examination of the left eye showed a large macular hole with a hypopigmented atrophic area inferiorly (Figure 1).
