The Kerala Health Department has announced that all ten patients affected by amoebic meningoencephalitis this year have fully recovered and been discharged. According to the state Health Ministry, out of the mere 25 patients worldwide who have ever recovered from this disease, 14 are from Kerala. While the global mortality rate of amoebic meningoencephalitis is 97%, Kerala remarkably reduced it to 26%. Kerala achieved this by making rapid and accurate diagnoses and timely treatment with medications like miltefosine.
All ten amoebic meningoencephalitis patients were treated at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.
