The Maharashtra government has announced a five star hospital rating system for 623 public healthcare facilities in an effort to improve quality standards, promote transparency, and strengthen public confidence in government hospitals. According to a Government Resolution issued by the state public health department, the initiative will cover district hospitals, sub district hospitals, rural hospitals, women's hospitals, general hospitals, referral service hospitals, trauma care centers, and Employees' State Insurance hospitals.
Hospitals will be assessed across five broad domains using 10 measurable criteria.
