The standard explanation trotted out by officials, activists and journalists for the drop in the sex ratio is female foeticide. Then does this mean that the explanation for the high sex ratio in Chembur is male foeticide? The problem is that a lot of these health activists and officials have a one-track mind, and just want publicity and funds to carry out 'sting operations', as a result of which they are unable to determine the real reason for why the sex ratio varies.
And sadly, health journalists don't have the expertise or the time to get at the bottom of things, which is why they are happy to trot out the tired old explanations which are handed out, even though these are wrong. Sadly, the narrative has been hijacked, and we have ended up barking up the wrong tree for many years.
