Gastrointestinal bleeding symptoms are a common cause of hospitalisation which can be life threatening when not treated quickly. While the symptoms of GI bleeding are themselves dangerous, they are also a sign of more serious complications. Upper gastrointestinal bleeding is almost four times more prevalent than lower GI tract bleeding.

This guideline provides recommendations based on current evidence for best practice in the management of acute upper and lower gastrointestinal bleeding .
