Calciphylaxis is a rare but devastating condition predominantly observed in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients treated with dialysis (uremic calciphylaxis). But it is also seen in the patients with early stages of chronic kidney disease and with normal renal function (non-uremic calciphylaxis). This article reviews risk factors and the treatment of uremic calciphylaxis. Calciphylaxis is a rare condition with high morbidity and mortality.
Predominantly it is observed in the chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients treated with dialysis (uremic calciphylaxis) but also noticed in patients with normal kidney function and those with early kidney disease (non-uremic calciphylaxis). Calciphylaxis is characterized by painful skin lesions with poor healing which can be complicated by blistering and ulcerations with superimposed infections.
