Query- Some videos have surfaced wherein surgeons were seen to be viewing television while doing surgery. Is this a risk worth taking? I believe the surgeon can be sued if the surgery goes wrong and results in some discomfort as expected in any surgery (well within the risks explained while taking the consent). Kindly explain. Also, is playing light music as a stress buster in the OT is OK?
Answer- As per law, you have to provide the reasonable degree of skill and care while performing surgery. If the surgeon is watching television while doing surgery, he may be accused of negligence as TV is a distracter while doing surgery. Yes, it is common that TVs are installed in OT complex but mostly they are not in operating rooms.
