A 38 year male patient presented with bilateral hydroureter was posted for ureterocystoplasty with bladder augmentation under general anaesthesia. Intraoperative surgeons wanted to remove appendix to avoid acute appendicitis in future. So they took the consent from the patient's relatives and about the start appendicectomy.
But being a senior resident (Anaesthetist) I requested surgeons (professors) not to remove the appendix as no consent was taken from the patient. Initially they were not happy with my stand but later they agreed not to operate. Can any surgeon remove any body parts without patient's consent when he is under general anaesthesia (except life saving surgeries like obstetric hysterectomy)?
