Clinically the diagnosis of menopause is established by the absence of cessation of menses for 12 months as a consequence of physiological or age-related estrogen deficiency. Although menopause is a natural biological phenomenon in aging women, physical symptoms, such as hot flashes and emotional symptoms, may disrupt sleep, lower energy levels, or affect emotional health. Menopause may also result from surgical procedures such as a hysterectomy with bilateral oophorectomy or certain conditions, like endometriosis and breast cancer with antiestrogens and other cancers and chemotherapy medications.
