Recently there has been mushrooming of ophthalmic technicians in India, who are not at all trained in refraction etc nor they pass the examination. Yet they open an optical shop get an autorefractor and prescribe glasses. Not only this they even prescribe eye medicines. However on the other hand we have an optometrist or orthoptist they have special training in the field of optometry and orthoptist procedures and at the end of day, they have to pass an examination.
They can do refraction and prescribe glasses however it has to be rechecked by an ophthalmologist before it is given to patients. I would sincerely request MCI to look into this matter urgently to stop this practice of ophthalmic technicians. Share your views.
