A positive correlation between asbestos exposure and the risk of laryngeal cancer is already well established. However, no study has been conducted to ascertain the relationship between occupational exposure to asbestos and other head and neck cancers. A recent, large-scale study conducted in France indicated a significant association between previous occupational asbestos exposure and head and neck cancer incidences and mortality after excluding laryngeal cancers, irrespective of associated pleural plaques.

Although occupational hazards of asbestos do not exist anymore due to the prohibition of its use in industries, the study findings could prove helpful towards achieving the amends in medicolegal aspects in terms of compensation for head and neck cancer patients who had been occupationally exposed to asbestos.
