Currently, the new-born screening methods are not efficient to identify cystic fibrosis (CF) since these methods often give false positive test results and require additional testing. Early detection of CF can significantly benefit the affected infants with better clinical outcomes. Scientists at McMaster University have sought several new bio-markers that could facilitate earlier and more definitive detection of CF. Using less than a single drop of blood, researchers compared the samples from CF positive infants with that of healthy infants.
They discovered new compounds and some simple amino acids directly related to CF-affected infants. Apart from diagnosis, these bio-markers could offer new insights into the pathology of the disease.
