Apex medical regulator of the NMC has decided to eliminate the virginity test (Figure 1) from the MBBS curriculum given that it lacks a scientific basis. The curriculum so far taught medical students about the conduct and medicolegal aspect of virginity tests that are carried out on orders from the court to settle disputes in matrimony and sexual assault cases. This groundbreaking decision brings a lot of unlearning to the medical community. NMC hopes the decision would aid medical practitioners to appraise Indian courts on the unscientific basis of the so far practiced virginity tests and eventually bring a stop to orders for such invalid tests.
