In recent years, Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors have gained increasing importance and have firmly established as a class of oral antidiabetic agents in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Many national and international guidelines have recommended DPP-4 inhibitors to be implemented into the T2DM treatment algorithms. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) and European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) recommend DPP-4 inhibitors as second-line therapy options after metformin failure.
