The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has asked doctors to mandatorily request every brain-dead patient’s kin to donate organs. This could prove to be a revolutionary step for cadaver organ transplant. The next step could be establishing a system where organs from a brain-dead patient could be essentially harvested until the patient’s family denies this in writing.
It should be noteworthy that the law was passed two years ago but it was only last week that the IMA issued a circular directing its 2.5 lakh member-doctors to safeguard that the families of those dying in a hospital or at home are given the option to donate organs-the corneas, at least. This method, designated as ‘required request’ could accelerate organ donation-which has been almost ineffective in most parts of the country, particularly Bengal in just a year, the IMA feels.
