Many contradictory reports have been recorded in the literature about the effects of diabetes on outcomes of colorectal cancer. Hence, it is of utmost importance to carry out a reliable study regarding the effect of diabetes on colorectal cancer complications. This article is a synopsis of the original article published in a renowned journal of PLoSONE. Aim of the study :  To assess the impact of diabetes on perioperative colorectal cancer surgery outcomes, as compared to a diabetes-free reference population, and to examine factors affecting perioperative risk.

Diabetes is suggested as a primary cause of morbidity in 20% of surgery cases. This percentage ranges 3-57% in case of colorectal surgery.
