A 26-year -old woman who is 5 weeks postpartum presents with right breast pain and fever. She is breastfeeding her son. Over the past 3 weeks, she has visited her family physician for mastitis and has been prescribed antibiotics. However, the pain is now worsening. She is normally fit and does not consume any medications. She is allergic to penicillin.
Examination She is febrile (100.2°F ) Pulse rate 92/min There is a localized, tender area, adjacent to the areola of the right breast.
