According to data from the National Medical Commission (NMC), India has a total of 13,86,136 registered allopathic doctors, with the highest number in Maharashtra, which has 209,540 doctors. This is followed by Tamil Nadu with 149,399 registered doctors and Karnataka with 141,154. The Union Minister of State has shared these figures in response to questions raised in the Lok Sabha regarding the country's medical infrastructure and patient-doctor ratio.
The Health Ministry also highlighted that India’s current doctor-population ratio of 1:836 surpasses the WHO standard of 1:1000, factoring in both allopathic and AYUSH practitioners.
