Periodontal diseases result from the multifactorial and complex interplay of infection and host response. Additionally, genetics can influence periodontal disorders and play a key role in the predisposition and progressiveness of the condition. With the help of new technologies, such as microarrays and DNA sequencing, it is possible to identify specific genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors that influence susceptibility to periodontitis. However, in order to apply these techniques for better management of periodontal disease, having sound knowledge of genetic determinants and safe modulation/control of host response is essential.
