Preexisting diabetes mellitus (PDM) affects around 1% of pregnancies worldwide and is associated with increased maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, only a small proportion of women receive appropriate preconception care (PCC), leaving many at higher risk. To address this gap, the Endocrine Society and the European Society of Endocrinology collaborated to issue evidence-based guidelines on PCC and pregnancy care for individuals with PDM. A multidisciplinary expert panel developed 10 practical recommendations aimed at helping clinicians optimize outcomes in this high-risk population.
