Small ascites associated with chronic liver disorder rarely need any treatment. However, large ascites need paracentesis . By the way, moderate ascites need treatment with salt restriction . Just take 4-6 grams of salt per day that's all.
Interestingly, spironolactone works very well , because, ascites are usually formed due to hyperaldosteronism. Loop diuretics do work well but the problem with most of the diuretics are development of hyponatremia, muscle cramps etc. Paracentesis usually leads to reduced circulating volume which is often known as Post paracentesis circulatory dysfunction (PPCD) characterized by renal failure, hyponatremia and hepatic encephalopathy.
