Pulmonary Thromboembolism (PTE) is a condition in which a blood clot, usually originating from the deep veins of the legs (deep vein thrombosis), travels to and obstructs the pulmonary arteries. This leads to impaired blood flow to the lungs, causing symptoms such as sudden onset dyspnea, chest pain, tachycardia, and hypoxia. PTE can be life-threatening and requires prompt diagnosis and anticoagulant therapy. Risk factors include prolonged immobilization, recent surgery, malignancy, pregnancy, and inherited thrombophilias. Diagnosis is supported by imaging such as CT pulmonary angiography and laboratory tests like D-dimer.
