ABSTRACT: The Government of India and National Medical Commission recently decided to crackdown on the quacks in medicine and constituted a six-member committee, to draft the procedural guidelines. Going down the line in the history of medicine there was a traditional Ayurvedic system of medicine since about 400 BC, the nucleus of which was Taxila University (now in Pakistan), even earlier herbal medicines were used to treat various common and war related injuries. Later the Unani and Tibbi medicine which originated in Greece (Unan) came to India with the Mughals.
Allopathic (modern) medicine came with the arrival of French, Dutch, Portuguese and British. The British recognized only allopathic medicine and all others were treated as quacks.
