Although genetic disorders are often the result of inherited gene mutations, most affected babies identified are from families with no history of the disorder. However, collecting a family health history is still helpful for expecting parents. The present article works as a quick checklist for assessment of genetic disorders without family history. Family history plays a critical role in assessing the risk of inherited medical conditions and single gene disorders.

Several methods have been established to obtain family medical histories, including the family history questionnaire or checklist and the pedigree.
