The imaging of pregnant women presents a unique challenge to radiologists. This is because of – necessity of the test as well as the associated risk with radiation – in pregnant woman that can affect fetus. This article summarizes the risk factors in radiology during pregnancy. Pregnant patients may experience non-obstetrical emergencies over the course of their pregnancy, including appendicitis, renal colic, ovarian torsion, hemorrhagic ovarian cysts, trauma, and pulmonary embolism. In such situation, radiological imaging is useful.
But, exposure to radiation may harm both the woman and the fetus. So, critical assessment of radiation risks and dosage should be required in such cases.
