Lot of patients on statins on their own stop the drug after some months. As per the literature available this has got a rebound phenomenon as like stopping certain antihypertensives and can lead to precipitation of heart attacks. In two of my patients increase in lipid profile when the tests was repeated and I suspected laboratory technique and discussed with laboratory. On going through the literature this is possible and should be remembered before putting the blame on laboratory.
I verified with patients and stopping of statins is noted. Hence our patients should be advised to continue statins and not to stop so that rebound phenomenon does not occur at a serious level. This is a practical clinical information for all physicians.
