Kounis syndrome is the contemporary occurrence of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) with an allergic or hypersensitivity reaction. It has been associated with various drugs, food, insect stings, environmental exposures, and medical conditions. This syndrome is triggered by inflammatory mediators such as histamine, neutral proteases, arachidonic acid products, platelet-activating factor, and various cytokines and chemokines released during the activation process. In addition, a subset of platelets bearing FCeRI and FCeRII receptors are also involved in the activation cascade.
