170 children deaths in Bihar has shocked every doctor in country and is media headlines since so many days, most people think it is Japanese Encephalitis which epidemic killed thousand children in UP or AES or Acute encephalitis Syndrome whose exact virus is yet to be named. But if we take history of these patients we find that most patients are malnourished and dehydrated children under age of 10 years living in Lychee gardens or fields where Lychee is grown as Commercial food in this season. Most present as convulsion in morning with low blood sugar but no fever and have high mortality same day even infusing sugar.
These children have eaten mostly only lychee as food for more than 3 days. So many are thinking it as Refeeding Syndrome where patient were hypoglycemic and once fed sugar although hypoglycemia corrected but due to less electrolyte and shifting of fluids and electrolytes…
