Although the potential of bariatric surgery in improving glycemic control is well established in T2D patients, its role in reducing microvascular outcomes in T2D is still unclear. A recent study revealed the role of bariatric surgery in reducing microvascular outcomes in T2D patients. The study included 4024 adult T2D participants who had gone bariatric surgery and matched the microvascular outcomes with those who had not had the surgery.

The incident rates of microvascular diseases in bariatric surgery group at 1, 3, 5, 7 years were relatively lower (6.0%, 11.8%, 16.9% and 22.5%) compared to non-surgery group (11.2%, 24.3%, 34.7%, 44.2%). These results suggest that bariatric surgery not only improved the blood glucose levels in T2D patients but was also involved in lowering of microvascular complications in them.
