The Third International Consensus for Sepsis and Septic Shock defines sepsis as a life-threatening organ dysfunction owing to dysregulated host responses to infection. Epidemiological data from the 2017 Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factor Study revealed a higher global burden of sepsis than previously projected 1 .
