A consumer court in Maharashtra has awarded a woman Rs 12.68 lakh in compensation after finding two doctors negligent for leaving a surgical mop inside her abdomen during a cesarean section. The retained mop led to serious postoperative complications, additional surgery, and prolonged recovery, prompting the court to hold the doctors accountable for failing to meet basic standards of care. The case stemmed from a 2022 cesarean delivery performed at a private hospital in Nashik.

Soon after surgery, the patient developed persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, and difficulty eating, along with a sensation that something had been left inside her abdomen.
