Oily skin is driven by excessive sebaceous gland activity and a self-perpetuating “oily-skin loop” involving oxidative stress, inflammation, and microbial dysbiosis, yet effective, well-tolerated cosmetic interventions remain limited. To address this gap, a randomized split-face clinical trial evaluated the safety and efficacy of a standardized isorhamnetin-rich Opuntia ficus-indica flower extract cream in regulating sebum production and cutaneous inflammation in 22 subjects with combination to oily skin.

The study found that isorhamnetin-rich Opuntia ficus-indica extract significantly reduced skin sebum content by 13.1% and 21.1% on the forehead and by 10.4% and 15.8% in the alar groove at 14 and 28 days, respectively, with a 37.2% reduction in Sebum Excretion Rate and a mattifying effect lasting up to 7.1 hours.
